Lyle started collecting tattoo-related license plates in 1971 when he was racing around the streets of Sausalito in a hot red Mini with 'TUTTOO' posted on the rear.
"You can see it in the documentary film Tattoo '70. I was coming back from the beach one night and I got hit with a red-light and a siren. I was drinking Irish Coffees at the time and they're pretty pungent. I was sweating until the cop looked down at me and said, 'Are you Lyle Tuttle? I recognize your license plate. I've been meaning to stop by your shop!' Even though I got out of the ticket, I took the license plate off the next morning. The night of the filming, the car was stolen. I think it was an inside job."
